The was founded in 1881 and was incorporated as the Times-Mirror Company in 1884. The collection consists of photonegatives as well as photographic prints documenting events and people in Southern California, the U. S., and the world. The material originates from the newspaper and includes glass negatives (circa 1918-1932), nitrate negatives (circa 1925-45), and safety negatives (circa 1935-1990). Biography The Los Angeles Times was founded in 1881 when Nathan Cole Jr. and Thomas Gardiner hired the Mirror Printing Office and Book Bindery to print the first edition of the Los Angeles Daily Times ; Cole (and Gardiner) gave up ownership of The Times to Jesse Yarnell, T.J. Caystile and S.J. Mathes, the printers of the newspaper and the owners of the Los Angeles Daily Times ; they hired Harrison Gray Otis as editor (1882), who turned it int...
